France Streamlines Sports Betting Market To Combat Match-Fixing

The French gaming regulator, ANJ, is tidying up its policies, particularly regarding the roster of athletic contests open for wagering. Since 2010, French gamblers could only place bets on a curated selection of sporting events. However, this “sports betting list” has undergone numerous revisions, making it, as per the ANJ, “challenging to comprehend and inconsistent.”

Initiated in December, this reassessment aims to curb match manipulation by forbidding wagers that “don’t hinge on bettors’ expertise and sports acumen.” Essentially, they’re aiming to eliminate obscure bets that are poorly understood and susceptible to rigging. Additionally, they hope to restrict excessive betting on specific events.

What’s different now? Firstly, a significant 179 competitions have been struck from the list. Some were removed due to their discontinuation, while others were deemed vulnerable to match-fixing. The ANJ specifically cited the Tunisian Ligue Professionnelle 1 as an example removed due to match-fixing concerns.

Other competitions, such as the Armenian Premier League, were dropped for no longer fulfilling the “legal criteria for inclusion,” seemingly lacking significance or recognition. In simpler terms, they weren’t popular enough to justify their place on the list.

Following this removal process, the list now encompasses a total of 772 competitions.

Alright, I’ve got it. Check out this revised version, aiming for a similar feel with different phrasing:

“Although the language surrounding permissible player wagers has been simplified, the total quantity of betting choices remains unaffected. Imagine it like this: rather than itemizing each individual outcome, they are now consolidated into wider classifications.

This adjustment also relaxes certain limitations on tennis and basketball wagering. As an illustration, you can now place bets on occurrences such as a basketball player exceeding 20 points, a previously prohibited action.

These modifications follow an assessment by the ANJ (the French gaming regulatory body) of forthcoming wagering promotions. Their objective was to guarantee consistency with the latest, more transparent regulations.”
