The Ontario Horse Racing authority has imposed a two-year suspension on racehorse conditioner, Anthony Beaton, following allegations of animal abuse. Worries surfaced when a young horse under Beaton’s supervision displayed indications of severe disregard. The OHRA promptly initiated an inquiry upon receiving a complaint on October 13, 2023. Beaton’s permit was revoked that very day, prohibiting him from involvement in equestrian competitions until October 12, 2025. “The ethical care of the animals and the well-being of all participants are paramount to upholding the integrity of horse racing,” stated Carlene Schinzel, the OHRA’s Registrar and Chief Executive Officer. “The OHRA holds all individuals involved, particularly those entrusted with the horses’ welfare, to the utmost standards.” Beaton has the option to contest the decision through the autonomous Horse Racing Appeal Tribunal. He faces accusations of breaching Rules 6.20(b) and 6.22 of the Standardbred Racing Regulations, which pertain to conduct detrimental to racing’s best interests and the maltreatment of horses both during and outside of races.
