The gaming industry in Belgium was somewhat of a free-wheeling space, according to regulatory specialist Roland Loschke. He doesn’t anticipate Belgium mirroring Italy’s approach of a comprehensive prohibition on gaming promotions.
Loschke, who manages compliance issues for the Belgian National Lottery, suggests the latest legislation aims to establish control over the sector.
A newly introduced Royal Decree, unveiled in November and effective from June 1st, will impose restrictions on aspects like the permitted locations for gambling advertisements – for instance, internet-based casinos will only be allowed to promote on their own web platforms.
Nevertheless, Loschke perceives a significant distinction between the Royal Decree and Italy’s Dignity Decree, believing the former is intended to guide the gaming industry towards a responsible path.
“The underlying principle was evident from the outset,” he elaborated. “We’re not pursuing the Italian model, where the ban stemmed from a political decision by a party opposed to gambling and determined to criminalize it.”
“Outright prohibition is not the answer. We’ve witnessed this with substances, spirits, and cigarettes. It’s truly about establishing order. Previously, we were akin to a vessel lacking a captain.”
Loschke’s perspectives contribute to a broader dialogue on gaming regulations featured in the March/April issue of Gambling Insider magazine.
