The Australian Media and Communications Authority (ACMA) took action against illicit wagering platforms targeting Australians during the FIFA Women’s World Cup, co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand this past summer. Prior to and throughout the competition, the ACMA scrutinized 200 overseas gaming services, identifying 18 in breach of the 2001 Interactive Gambling Act.
Three of the unauthorized providers ceased their Australian operations upon contact from the ACMA, while an additional 15 had their web domains blocked by Australian internet providers at the ACMA’s behest.
Carolyn Lidgerwood, ACMA representative and online gaming lead, stressed that these platforms lacked authorization to provide wagering services within Australia, with some even offering gambling formats entirely prohibited, such as internet-based casinos and slot machines, or live, in-progress betting.
“Unlawful gambling providers frequently attempt to capitalize on prominent sporting occasions to advertise their services to enthusiasts,” stated Lidgerwood. “These platforms also lack the consumer safeguards present with gambling services licensed within Australia.”

Authorities in Australia are taking stringent measures against these dubious websites. They’ve already forced the closure of several, including Lucky7even and Zota Bet, and their efforts are ongoing.
