Gaming companies have suggested a voter referendum to introduce sports wagering to California
The referendum, labeled the “California Homeless and Mental Health Support Solutions Act,” would authorize legal online sports wagering, which the proposal asserts will “produce billions in revenue” to combat homelessness and enhance mental health support.
The proposal is supported by seven leading gaming companies: Bally’s, BetMGM, DraftKings, Fanatics, FanDuel, Penn National Gaming and Wynn Interactive.
As the proposal necessitates amending the state constitution, it needs to collect signatures from 8% of the voters who participated in the last gubernatorial election before it can be submitted. For the current election cycle, this number is set at 997,139.
If the required number of signatures is attained, the proposal will appear on the November 2022 ballot.
