Australia Launches BetStop: A New Self-Exclusion Registry for Online Gambling

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has established a set of regulations for the nation’s new online and telephone gambling self-exclusion registry, announcing it will be named “BetStop.”

The registry will enable individuals to voluntarily exclude themselves from all Australian-licensed online and phone wagering services for durations ranging from three months to permanent exclusion.

Upon registration with BetStop, authorized betting providers will be obligated to shut down the individual’s betting account, prevent them from placing wagers, opening new accounts, and sending any promotional messages.

These betting providers will also be required to advertise BetStop through their websites, mobile applications, and marketing campaigns.

“BetStop will assist those susceptible to gambling harm in taking control of their situation, allowing them to block themselves from all authorized online and phone betting services through a single procedure,” ACMA Chair Nerida O’Loughlin stated.

“BetStop will be operational in the upcoming months. The present moment is opportune for the industry to prepare and ensure their systems and processes are in place to safeguard their customers and utilize BetStop.”

Individuals seeking to modify their wagering practices can also explore Betstop to aid them in making these decisions.

The program’s title and initial regulations have been validated following the Australian Communications and Media Authority’s (ACMA) request for Australian internet service providers (ISPs) to block 11 additional gambling websites from foreign countries this week.

The ACMA determined that Pokie Island, Rich Palms, Lucky Tiger Casino, Megaslot, Bitkingz, Parimatchwin, Casino Rocket, Montecryptos, Cabarino, Robin Roo, and Jackpot Jill VIP all violated the Interactive Gambling Act of 2001.

As a result, the ACMA declared these websites are unlawfully offering online gambling in Australia and instructed ISPs to restrict access.
